São Vicente is an island where the energy of the city is combined with the beauty of nature. The capital, Mindelo, is the cultural heart of Cape Verde – the streets are full of music, cafes and bars, and the second largest carnival in the world is held here every year, at the turn of February and March. The city’s historic buildings and its lively atmosphere give the island a unique character, and although it is a small island, it is the second most populous with over 80 thousand inhabitants.
For nature lovers, the island is also attractive outside the city – the highest mountain, which looks like a human face from Mindelo, offers not only beautiful panoramas, but also easy hiking. On the other side of the island there are beaches that come alive on weekends and holidays, ideal for relaxing and watching the local entertainment.
Mindelo offers a wonderful view of Santo Antão, but also of Santa Luzia and São Nicolau, and it is from here that ferries to Santo Antão depart. And if the weather permits, small fishing boats depart from the other side of the island to tour the island of Santa Luzia.
